Research Overview

Adipotide (FTPP, Prohibitin-Targeted Peptide 1) is a chimeric peptide that selectively destroys the blood supply to white adipose tissue. It consists of two functional domains: a targeting sequence that binds to prohibitin on the surface of blood vessels feeding fat tissue, and a pro-apoptotic sequence (D(KLAKLAK)2) that kills those blood vessel cells once bound.

By cutting off the blood supply specifically to fat tissue, Adipotide causes fat cell death through ischemia. In primate studies, it produced rapid and dramatic fat loss — obese rhesus monkeys lost 11% of body weight in 4 weeks. However, kidney toxicity was observed, which has limited its clinical development.

Key Research Findings

  • Obese rhesus monkeys lost 11% body weight in 28 days of treatment
  • Selectively targets blood vessels feeding white adipose tissue via prohibitin binding
  • Induced apoptosis (programmed cell death) specifically in fat tissue vasculature
  • Reduced BMI, waist circumference, and abdominal fat in primate studies
  • Kidney toxicity (reversible) observed in primate studies — primary safety concern

Research Dosage Protocols

Adipotide is an experimental compound with significant safety concerns (nephrotoxicity). Published primate studies used doses of 0.43 mg/kg subcutaneously. Renal function monitoring is essential in research protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Adipotide?

Adipotide is a targeting peptide that destroys blood vessels feeding fat tissue, causing fat cell death. It produced dramatic fat loss in primates but has kidney toxicity concerns.

Is Adipotide safe?

Kidney toxicity was observed in primate studies. While reversible upon discontinuation, this safety concern has limited clinical development. It is strictly an experimental compound.
